Abstract

This study aims to explore the balance between automation and human expertise in digitally transformed workplaces, examining how these two elements interact and influence workforce dynamics and organizational practices. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews with 27 participants working across various industries that have implemented automation technologies. The interviews were conducted online, and data were collected until theoretical saturation was reached. NVivo software was used for data analysis, which involved thematic analysis to identify key themes, subthemes, and concepts related to the role of automation, the value of human expertise, and the dynamics of collaboration between the two. The results revealed five major themes: the role of automation in workplaces, the value of human expertise, automation-human collaboration, impact on workforce dynamics, and organizational strategies for balancing automation and human expertise. Participants emphasized the increased efficiency brought by automation, but also expressed concerns about over-reliance on technology and job displacement. Human expertise was seen as crucial for tasks requiring creativity, emotional intelligence, and complex decision-making. Effective collaboration between automation and human workers was identified as key to enhancing productivity and decision-making, though trust in automated systems was essential. The integration of automation was also found to require continuous reskilling of employees, and the balance between automation and human expertise was linked to leadership, policy development, and ethical considerations. This study highlights the need for a human-centric approach to automation integration, where both automation and human expertise complement each other. Organizations should focus on transparency, trust-building, and employee involvement in the automation process to achieve optimal outcomes.
